Architecture Programme Delivers Student Satisfaction

Architecture students at Northumbria University are officially the most satisfied in UK higher education for the second year running.
For the second consecutive year, Northumbria University has the highest performing Architecture programmes in the country in the National Student Survey – seeing a rise from 93% in 2010 to 97% in the student satisfaction results.

The School of the Built and Natural Environment also saw other excellent results for its degree programmes. Physical Geography programmes (BSc (Hons) Geography and the Environmental Management programmes) recorded a 98% student satisfaction rate. Human Geography - BA (Hons) Geography – followed closely behind with a 92% satisfaction rate.

The School’s building programmes also saw an increase in the satisfaction of its students to 85%, making the students on its programmes the 4th most satisfied in the country in specific building subjects.

Planning (urban, rural and regional) recorded a 91% student satisfaction rate.
Peter Beacock, Director of Architecture, Engineering and Construction in the School of the Built and Natural Environment, said: “Our architecture programmes are very popular with students who benefit from our excellent studio facilities and the student-centred approach taken by staff. We are pleased that our continuous efforts to improve and develop our programmes and teaching environment have been reflected in the responses received from our satisfied students.
“The architecture teaching programme is centred on design projects based on engagement with the region, which gives students a sense of authenticity and relevance.”
The excellent student survey satisfaction results follow on from Paul Jones, Director of Architecture Programmes at Northumbria University, being awarded a National Teaching Fellowship – the most prestigious award for excellence in Higher Education teaching and support for learning.
Paul was awarded the Fellowship for his work enhancing the learning experiences of his students by developing novel methods of teaching in the architecture programmes including research-informed teaching and students’ exposure to real projects. An award-winning architectural designer himself, he has re-worked his own design processes into teaching materials to help and guide students through their own design process.
