Optimism As Government Announces Youth Unemployment Measures
The Prime Minister and his deputy are set to appear to announce the launch of a £60m initiative designed to ‘change young people’s lives’ by prioritising and addressing rising youth unemployment.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg commented, Britain’s economic and social prosperity is dependent on ‘giving young people the chance to benefit and prosper’. Over the next three years, the package will be injected to “advance and encourage social mobility” by securing more apprenticeships and work placements in the private sector. Furthermore, an additional £10m per annum Innovation Fund will be created, designed to give delivery organisations a real opportunity to develop innovative solutions to tackle unemployment.
Carmen Watson, Managing Director of Pertemps Recruitment Partnership said, “It’s reassuring that the Government has now declared its intentions more explicitly in regards to addressing the ‘lost generation’ of young people who are out of work. We have long called for a multi-stakeholder approach towards creating sustainable employment and these measures will go a long way in building these relationships.
“For many young people who have fallen outside of the work cycle for an extended period, getting back into a working routine can be a difficult task. Others find the transition from education to working life a struggle and we need to engage with these people if we wish to boost the economy. The recruitment agencies are just one cog in the wheel – education and skills providers also have an important role to play. But I’m glad that SMEs have responded to the call to offer work experience placements. This needs to continue.”
