Renewables Certification For Tesco
Tesco has achieved accreditation for its installation of waste-to-energy systems at two stores.
It has become the first retailer to produce biofuel certified under the government's Renewables Obligation scheme and Ofgem has now allowed the store to issue Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) for the fuel.
"To receive such exclusive recognition by the government is a huge boost for our renewable energy programme," commented Tesco's head of environment for its property services team, Bukky Bird.
"Tesco has fostered an important relationship with the supply chain and will look to roll out the fuel to more stores in the near future as we cement ourselves becoming a zero carbon retailer by 2050."
By 2020, Tesco hopes to reduce carbon emissions by 50 per cent and it is working towards the goal by producing energy from waste to power combined heat and power generators at two stores – one in Dumfries, Scotland, and another at Cheetham Hill in Manchester.
