Siegle: Waste Industry And Consumers
Reducing landfill waste is a shared responsibility, according to broadcaster and environmentalist Lucy Siegle speaking at RWM in partnership with CIWM.
Lucy, who was speaking on day one (13 September) of the waste and resource recovery industry’s flagship event said that the waste industry needs to continue to work alongside consumers to drive a joint desire to reduce waste and recycle more.
She also asserted that the waste and recycling industry and consumers have a responsibility to reduce waste by encouraging the next generation of product and packaging designers to look at waste as a resource and to “make green acceptable”.

Event director Gerry Sherwood said: “Lucy’s comments echo the industry’s own beliefs. We know that consumers want to reduce their waste and the industry wants to facilitate to do it. However, to make real progress needs the involvement of the entire supply chain, something that RWM in partnership with CIWM is helping to achieve.”
RWM continues today and tomorrow (14 and 15 September) with seminar sessions featuring speakers from the entire recycling ‘loop’.
Supported by the Environmental Services Association (ESA), RWM in partnership with CIWM is the UK’s biggest event for organisations with an interest in waste and recycling. Formed late last year from the merger of the successful Recycling and Waste Management Exhibition (RWM) and Futuresource shows, it will feature more than 650 exhibitors plus a three-day seminar programme with over 90 speakers – the largest collection of free content in the industry and all CPD-accredited by the CIWM. Designed to inform, improve and inspire organisations, it covers all areas of waste and recycling, from plant, vehicles and equipment to practical advice on how effective waste management can help to cut costs and turn waste into a valuable resource.
