Sustainable Design And Construction Innovators Asked To Come Forward And Be Counted

Hertfordshire Building Futures Awards 2011 on the lookout for more innovative and sustainable projects to commend

Building on the resounding success of the 2009 inaugural Hertfordshire Building Futures Awards, Hertfordshire local authorities are on the lookout once again for those individuals and organisations that make Hertfordshire and its built environment greener and more sustainable.

Developers, architects, local authorities and homeowners with a flair for innovation, creativity and groundbreaking design, are being called upon to put themselves forward for the biennial awards which recognise excellence in building projects.

Entries for the awards can be submitted from today, by anyone who wants to acknowledge and reward sustainable development in Hertfordshire. So, if you’re a builder with an ingenious way of reusing precious building materials, or a local organisation with a thirst for water conservation, you can enter for this year’s awards.

Any development is eligible, no matter how big or small, from individual buildings to large scale developments in the public or private sectors, and candidates may be either self nominated or nominated by a third party.

Eligible schemes include new build, conversion and retrofitting in the residential, commercial, retail, education, health and leisure sectors. There are only two conditions that need to be met:

·         The project must be located in Hertfordshire
·         It must have been completed between 16 September 2009 and 16 September 2011

Once entries are received, they will be assessed by an expert panel of judges who are all leaders in the fields of sustainability, urban design and architecture. This year’s judges will be: urban designer Jeremy Caulton; architect Barry Shaw; sustainability expert Dr. David Strong and sustainability consultant Isabel McAllister who developed the original Building Futures guidance.

Richard Thake, Hertfordshire County Council's Executive Member for Environment & Community Safety, said:
“The 2009 Building Futures Awards were a great success and highlighted the innovation and creativity which is behind sustainable development in Hertfordshire.  Entries were exceptional, and I’ve no doubt that those this year will be equally excellent.  With almost half of CO2 emissions coming from the use of buildings, I believe we should be seeking to reward developments coming forward in the County which demonstrate how we can make real inroads into cutting our emissions.”

Neil Evison Chair HBCEC from Constructing Excellence in East of England - Herts and Beds Club said:

“The biennial Building Futures Awards are a great way not only to celebrate sustainability and eco friendly design, but also to reward the innovation, skill and vision which goes into making such design a reality. As the 2009’s awards highlighted, there are some truly excellent examples of sustainable building projects taking place all the time across Hertfordshire, and these awards are a perfect platform to give sustainability pioneers the acknowledgement they deserve.”

Cate Hall, Executive Director-Services at Watford Borough Council, said:

“Winning a Building Futures Award in 2009 is something that we are extremely proud of and has certainly put our organisation on the map for our commitment to a sustainable future. There are lots of great projects in the area which deserve commending too, and I’d strongly suggest entering the awards if you have been involved in an eco-friendly project in the last two years.”

Entries must be received by 5pm on 14 October. To find out how you can enter the awards, visit: www.hertslink.org/buildingfutures
