Help us to help you!

The National Flood Forum (NFF) is a community-based network set up by people who have been through the experience of flooding and suffered the distress, losses and frustration that follow.

The NFF was set up in 2002 with generous start-up funding from The Environment Agency. We aim to give communities and individuals who have been flooded or are at risk, the support, knowledge and help they need to organise themselves, to manage the effects of flooding, to promote self-help and to campaign for flood alleviation.

We provide a strong and independent voice that represents the interests of people affected by flooding with the authorities responsible for managing it. This includes working closely with The Environment Agency, Water Companies, and Local Authorities, the government and insurance industry.

The NFF actively promotes the formation of ‘community led flood action groups’ and now has a designated community group’s coordinator, who works first hand supporting them. These groups empower the communities at risk to feel they are actively involved in flood management for their area.

The groups also create an excellent focal point for agencies who manage flood risk and encourage both community and multi agency partnerships. During the past 5 years we have built a network of well over 150 community flood groups across the country. What started as a small initiative, now supports people affected by flooding all over England and Wales. In the autumn of 2007, we become a registered charity, but in these hard economic times we have not found our charitable status to be a good in road for income for us.What we urgently need is funding to enable us to remain free at the point of contact for the victims of flooding and in addition, we need additional reserves in place to allow us to go into a newly flooded area to offer our support and expertise for affected communities.

At the moment, we have no guaranteed income. Considering the amount of funding that goes into flood risk and the level of service we provide to those most in need, we feel it would be a national scandal if the NFF were to close as a direct result of having no money to support communities at risk. The NFF recently appointed 6 new trustees to the board who all give their time for free and hugely extend our knowledge base and the level of technical support we can give. The NFF are determined to be free at the point of contact with our advice and support to all individuals and communities at risk of flooding. To enable that to happen, we need urgent funding of at least £200k. (Approximately the cost of repair to the insurance industry of 6 flooded houses) With the increased threat of flooding to the UK, there has never been a time when our skills and expertise has been more needed.
