Use Of Temporary Agency Labour Continues To Grow In April

New data from de Poel, the number one procurer of temporary agency labour, shows the use of temporary agency workers in the UK rose by a respectable 22% in April, compared with the same time last year.

Figures show that the number of hours worked by temporary agency workers increased by an average of 22.45% last month and some sectors, such as construction, business services and logistics, experienced higher growth than this.

In particular, the construction sector experienced a huge 129% rise in the use of temporary workers last month. This data comes ahead of the ONS labour statistics due out tomorrow. The stats are a good indicator of the current state of the labour market and the continued increase in the use of temporary agency labour paints an optimistic picture across many industry sectors.

More information
Matthew Sanders, CEO of de Poel, comments: “Temporary agency workers are continually seen as a great way to fill skills gaps in the workforce and can be a brilliant solution when short term labour is needed. April has continued to see a growth in the use of temporary agency labour which may be down to the unprecedented number of Bank Holidays in the month.”

However, mirroring last month’s results, the care sector has again decreased its use of temporary labour, this time by over 15%, while the manufacturing sector experienced a small rise of less than 5%.

Matthew continues: “Temporary agency workers are the backbone of UK Plc as they offer a rapid solution to market fluctuations, often filling skills gaps at short notice- especially during times of economic unrest. With the new Agency Workers Regulations coming into force in October, organisations need to start preparations for the introduction now, otherwise there could be a huge increase in the cost of temporary labour. Consideration from businesses also needs to be given as to how they are going to place temporary agency workers within their organisation in the future to ensure they can still maintain an efficient, cost effective and flexible workforce.”
